Iran is “Ready to reciprocate” if Syria sees ties as beneficial

17. September 2025 - 18:35

Damascus- SANA

Iran has responded to recent comments by the Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa suggesting that the break in ties with Tehran is not permanent, saying it is prepared to restore relations whenever Damascus decides renewed ties serve its people’s interests.

“I believe that severing relations between two Islamic countries bound by historic ties of friendship will certainly not be permanent,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said during his weekly press conference on Wednesday.

“We are not in a hurry. Whenever [the Syrian government] realizes that friendship with Iran serves the interests of the Syrian people, we will be ready to reciprocate,” Baqaei added.

Earlier Friday, President al-Sharaa said that while Syria had managed to build ties with Western states and maintain balanced relations with Russia, its relationship with Iran remained “complicated.”

“As for Iran, the wound was somewhat deeper, and we are not saying there will be a permanent rupture between us and the Iranians,” al-Sharaa said in an interview with Syrian state-run TV Al-Ekhbaria.

Relations between Damascus and Tehran were cut after Assad was toppled on December 8, 2024, following a major military operation by Syrian revolutionary factions that led to the liberation of Syria.

Iran had been Assad’s key ally since the start of the Syrian revolution in 2011, providing military and economic support to keep him in power and to preserve Tehran’s regional influence.

Human Rights Watch: Israel commits war crimes in southern Syria

17. September 2025 - 16:44

New York-SANA

Human Rights Watch confirmed that Israeli forces occupying parts of southern Syria since December 2024 are committing a range of violations some of which constitute war crimes against Syrian residents.

The organization called on governments to suspend any military support to Israel that would facilitate violations of human rights and international law in southern Syria, and to impose sanctions on those responsible for the violations.

The violations, included forced displacement, confiscating and demolishing homes, depriving residents of their property and livelihoods, and arbitrarily detaining and transferring them to Israel, the organization said.

The Watch noted in a report published Wednesday on its website that since the fall of the former regime in December 2024, Israel has infiltrated the demilitarized zone overseen by the United Nations, which separates the occupied Golan Heights from the rest of Syrian territory.

“Israel has established nine military positions extending from Mount Hermon, through Quneitra city, to parts of western Daraa, and has intensified its airstrikes on military infrastructure” the Watch added.

The organization noted that international humanitarian law, under Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, prohibits the unjustified forced displacement of civilians in occupied territories and considers it a war crime.

Human Rights Watch called on the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other countries to support accountability measures for Israel through the International Criminal Court and to take steps to end its ongoing human rights violations.
