Den preisgekrönten schottischen Graphic-Novel-Autor Sean Michael Wilson kennt man vor allem durch „Secrets of the Ninja“, das 2016 mit dem International Manga Award ausgezeichnet wurde. Seine mehr als vierzig Bücher befassen sich mit Themen aus Geschichte, Politik und sozialen Fragen, er war schon für den Eisner und den Harvey Award nominiert. Illustrator Keko, der als Jose Antonio Godoy in Madrid geboren wurde, zeichnete unter anderem die von Antonio Altarriba getexteten Thriller-Comics „Ich, der Verrückte“ und „Ich, der Mörder“, das 2015 mit dem Grand Prix de la Critique ACBD, dem Prix BD Polar und dem Prix BD Lire ausgezeichnet wurde. Zusammen haben die beiden nun mit „Abdullah Öcalan. Eine illustrierte Biografie“ eine spektakuläre Vita des kurdischen Vordenkers vorgelegt – und zwar in Form einer lesenswerten Graphic Novel.

„Unter Verwendung autobiografischer Texte zeichnet die Graphic Novel das Leben des kurdischen Freiheitskämpfers Abdullah Öcalan von seinen Kindheits- und Jugendtagen über seine Politisierung als Student und die Gründung der PKK bis zu den Gefängnisjahren auf der Insel Imrali nach“, schreibt der Münsteraner Unrast-Verlag, bei dem das Werk erscheint, in der Ankündigung. Und weiter: „Der in Kurdistan hochgeachtete Öcalan, der von seinen Anhänger:innen liebevoll ‚Apo‘ genannt wird, führte den kurdischen Freiheitskampf aktiv als Vorsitzender der PKK von deren Gründung 1978 bis zu seiner von der NATO orchestrierten Verschleppung und Inhaftierung im Jahr 1999 an. Seit 25 Jahren befindet er sich auf der Gefängnisinsel Imrali in Isolationshaft, wo er zahlreiche Bücher geschrieben hat, die weltweit Beachtung fanden.

In der vorliegenden illustrierten Biografie, die anlässlich seines 75. Geburtstags erscheint, erfahren wir in Öcalans Worten, wie seine Kindheit im kurdischen Südosten der Türkei verlief und wie er Ende der 1960er-Jahre politisiert wurde. Anhand seiner Lebensgeschichte erfahren die Leser:innen von der brutalen Unterdrückung, die das kurdische Volk erlitten hat. Das Buch geht auch auf die von Öcalan entwickelten, für den heutigen Kampf wesentlichen Theorien ein, wie das Primat der Frauenbefreiung und das Konzept des demokratischen Konföderalismus, und gibt schließlich einen Einblick in das beeindruckende radikaldemokratische Gesellschaftsprojekt in Rojava.“

Die neue Biografie über Abdullah Öcalan wird als Edition der Internationalen Initiative „Freiheit für Öcalan – Frieden in Kurdistan“ herausgegeben. Ein Sprecher sagte zur ANF: „Wir sind froh, mit ‚Abdullah Öcalan. Berlinerinnen und Berliner haben am 4. April die Möglichkeit, die Macher von „Abdullah Öcalan. Eine illustrierte Biografie“ zu treffen. HAVANA, SANA- Representatives of the Syrian and Cuban Chambers of Commerce held a virtual video meeting, in the presence of the ambassadors of both countries, to discuss ways to enhance trade and economic exchange between the two countries.

The two parties called for overcoming all obstacles and difficulties and raising the level of trade relations so that relations reach the excellent and historical level of political relations between the two countries.

Both parties stressed the necessity of overcoming the unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and breaking the blockade on trade exchange, through mutual cooperation.

The two sides stressed the importance of exchanging trade delegations, increasing participation in economic activities in the two countries, attending international exhibitions held in Havana and Damascus, and accelerating the signing of the compensatory barter agreement and other bilateral agreements that are in the interest of raising the level of trade and economic exchange between the two countries.

They expressed their optimism for achieving greater trade cooperation, as they called for the exchange of visits by businessmen to learn more about the capabilities and needs of each country.

Declaring, "We are outraged, we are heartbroken," hundreds of protesters turned out to block Biden's motorcade en route to his State of the Union speech, forcing cars to take "the long way" to the Capitol. Demonstrators from Jewish Voice For Peace and other groups said they were "holding a people's state of the union" to call for an end to U.S funding for Israel's assault on Gaza. "We know the state of the union," they said. “It's a state of genocide."

Concluding a day-long series of protests across Washington DC, hundreds of people in black shirts reading "Not In Our Name" and "Biden’s Legacy = Genocide" sat and stood along Pennsylvania Avenue near the Capitol, delaying Biden's speech by about a half hour. Organizers with megaphones led the crowd in impassioned chants: "Biden Biden You Can't Hide, We Charge You With Genocide," "Free, Free Palestine," "Stop Arming Israel," "Shame," "No More Money for Israel's Crimes." Banners were unfurled with the names of the over 30,000 Palestinians killed to date, alongside a sign that read, "Each Child of Gaza Is One of Our Own." Hours before the speech, demonstrators also gathered outside the White House, prompting police to block off roads. A Palestinian flag hung from the balcony of a Congressional office building, and many protesters donned keffiyehs. Said Ahmad Abuznaid, director of the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, "We are here today because enough is enough."

Demonstrators also blocked traffic across the country from Los Angeles to Boston, where over 50 people were arrested. In Chicago, activists from a dozen Palestinian, Jewish, Muslim, multi-racial and teaching organizations held a 24-hour vigil that began with the reading of the names of Gaza's victims. "Thousands and thousands of people, men, women, children are dying," said one JVP member. "(It's) important to say these are real human beings." Arguing Biden would "say nothing substantive" about the conflict, many cited the need to "deliver our own state of the union." They are demanding a permanent ceasefire, an end to U.S. military funding for Israel, the reinstatement of funding to UNRWA, the UN agency that provides critical humanitarian aid, and investment in meeting Palestinian needs, from housing to health care to, ultimately, the dismantling of Israel's decades-old apartheid state in order to usher in "a just and lasting peace."

Among those participating were members of the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization that works in Gaza and the West Bank trying to serve hot meals and find food and water for the displaced. "The Biden Administration has the power, and the responsibility, to stop the killing," said AFSC General Secretary Joyce Ajlouny. "It is a cruel irony to drop food when at the same time the U.S. is funding the dropping of bombs." Others argued that acts of civil disobedience are "the bare minimum" by way of response to an administration that has "lost (its) moral standing" by facilitating the slaughter of 30,000 civilians. "The State of the Union is genocide," said one JVP member. "We will not accept a president who claims to be fighting for democracy while ignoring the majority of people he represents."
