Today, Indivisible’s Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director Leah Greenberg, released the following statement in response to Senate Republicans voting down the Right to IVF Act, a bill that would protect access to IVF:

"Senator Schumer put Republicans to the test, and they failed. Trump and the GOP have been scrambling to hide their unpopular, outdated views on reproductive rights, but they’re not fooling anybody.

“Today, every single Republican Senator had a clear chance to protect IVF, something they claim to support, but nearly every single one of them refused. There’s no reason to believe their words when we can see their actions.

"When Republicans send mixed messages on TV and online, look at their voting records. They've consistently voted against protecting personal freedoms—from access to abortion and contraceptives to IVF. For decades, they've chipped away at reproductive rights, and it's only gotten worse since Trump entered politics.

"As attacks on reproductive rights intensify, including MAGA efforts against contraception, we can't let our guard down. Indivisible proudly supports Senator Schumer and Democrats for not only standing up for these fundamental rights, but continuously calling out their Republican colleagues’ blatant lies.

"Millions rely on contraception and IVF to build their families and lives, including Governor Walz who has shared his family's struggles with fertility. These rights are fundamental and widely supported, and Republicans are straight up trying to take them away. It is not only weird – it’s dangerous.

"We commend Senate Democrats for taking decisive and strategic action by bringing this bill for a vote. Between now and November, we’ll make sure every single voter sees through Republican bullshit and knows they voted against IVF protections today.”

House Republicans are expected to vote Wednesday on a government funding extension through March 2025 that includes a harmful poison pill, the SAVE Act, and allows key programs to expire – harming public health, farmworkers, and border security. Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen and co-chair of the Clean Budget Coalition, released the following statement:

“After weeks of internal chaos, House Republicans are no closer to a funding extension that can pass both chambers and win approval from the White House. With each passing day, House Republicans are bringing us closer to a costly, disruptive, and painful government shutdown that nobody in either party wants, especially not weeks before a high-stakes election. This is no way to govern.

“Speaker Johnson is letting MAGA extremists call the shots and sabotage the CR with a culture war poison pill that cannot become law. The SAVE Act is the ultimate poison pill, a destructive piece of policy that pretends we have a problem of non-citizens voting in this nation. This premise is categorically untrue.

“A clean CR is the only way forward. That was true weeks ago, true today, and will still be true if Congress breaches the September 30th funding deadline. The only question is how long it will take for Speaker Johnson to stand up to the MAGA extremists in his ranks and join the rest of the country – including Senate Republicans – in support of a clean, bipartisan bill.”

New York, SANA- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Qusay Al-Dahhak, called for implementing the advisory opinion of the international Court of Justice (ICJ) on the illegality of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the need to end it as much as possible and halt the settlement policy.

“The occupying entity is obliged to pay compensation for damages caused to natural or body corporates concerned and all countries and international organizations should not add any kind of recognition or legitimacy of the situation resulting from the continued and illegal existence of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands,” Ambassador Al-Dahhak said in statement delivered Tuesday before the the General Assembly in his capacity as current Chairman of the Arab Group.

He affirmed that the Arab group condemns the repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory and targeting civilians, residential neighborhoods and infrastructure as well as the ongoing aggression on Lebanon. 

The Permanent Representative added that Syria welcomes the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice and its request to implement it and end the Israeli occupation of Arab territories.

Der lange Marsch für die Freiheit von Abdullah Öcalan und eine politische Lösung der kurdischen Frage ist heute durch Hamm gezogen. Die Aktivist:innen der kurdisch-internationalistischen Jugendbewegung haben sich am Sonntag zu einer Konferenz in Bielefeld getroffen und bringen seit gestern ihre Forderungen auf die Straße. Die heutige Etappe der Fünf-Tage-Demonstration durch Nordrhein-Westfalen begann am Hauptbahnhof in Hamm. Zu Beginn wurde kurdischer Govend getanzt und eine Erklärung zu der Aktion vorgetragen. Auf dem Weg durch die Stadt wurden Flugblätter mit Informationen über die rechtswidrige Isolation von Öcalan in türkischer Haft und seine Bedeutung für eine Lösung der Kurdistan-Frage verteilt.

 

Morgen geht es weiter in Dortmund. Am Donnerstag führt der lange Marsch durch Essen, die letzte Station am Freitag ist Duisburg.

Hintergrund: Abdullah Öcalan und die kurdische Frage

Abdullah Öcalan, der 1978 die Arbeiterpartei Kurdistans (PKK) begründete, gilt als wirkmächtigster politische Gefangene der Gegenwart. Seit er vor mehr als 25 Jahren im Rahmen eines internationalen Komplotts, an dem unter anderem die USA und Israel beteiligt waren, in Kenia entführt und völkerrechtswidrig an die Türkei übergeben wurde, befindet er sich unter Abschottung von seiner Außenwelt im Inselgefängnis Imrali. Den letzten Anwaltsbesuch erhielt der heute 75-Jährige 2019, letztmaliger Familienbesuch kam 2020 zustande. Im März 2021 wurde bedingt durch eine internationale Protestwelle ein Telefongespräch zwischen Öcalan und seinem Bruder ermöglicht, das jedoch nach wenigen Minuten aus unbekannten Gründen unterbrochen worden ist.

Seitdem gibt es kein Lebenszeichen mehr von Öcalan und seinen drei Mitgefangenen Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım und Veysi Aktaş. Besuchsanträge der Istanbuler Kanzlei Asrin, die die vier Imrali-Gefangenen anwaltlich vertritt, werden von der türkischen Justiz abgelehnt, Auskunftsersuchen bleiben unbeantwortet. Zur juristischen Ummantelung werden alle sechs Monate verlängerte Disziplinarstrafen im Strafvollzug verhängt. Auch internationale Initiativen zur Aufhebung der Isolation auf Imrali werden in Ankara ignoriert.

Das Europäische Komitee zur Verhütung von Folter (CPT) hat nach einem Besuch im Inselgefängnis Imrali im Jahr 2019 festgestellt, dass die Incommunicado-Haft im Widerspruch zu internationalen Menschenrechtsstandards steht. Das Verbot von Anwaltsbesuchen verstößt gegen die 2015 aktualisierten Standard-Mindestregeln der Vereinten Nationen (UN) für die Behandlung von Gefangenen (Nelson-Mandela-Regeln), gegen die Empfehlungen des Antifolterkomitees des Europarats (CPT) und gegen das türkische Vollzugsgesetz.
