Ankara und Bagdad unterzeichnen militärisches Memorandum
Im Windschatten der Invasion in den Medya-Verteidigungsgebieten treiben die Türkei und der Irak ihre Annäherung weiter voran. Mit einem schriftlichen Memorandum einigten sich beide Länder am Donnerstag auf weitere Mechanismen, um ihr „Engagement“ beim Kampf gegen die Arbeiterpartei Kurdistans (PKK) auszubauen. Teil des auf einem hochrangigen Treffen in Ankara unterzeichneten Papiers zur „militärischen und sicherheitspolitischen Zusammenarbeit sowie Terrorismusbekämpfung“, an dem die Außen- und Verteidigungsminister, die Leiter der Nachrichtendienste sowie der Innenminister der Kurdistan-Region des Irak (KRI), Rêber Ahmed, und der Chef der schiitischen Volksmobilisierungseinheiten Hashd al-Shaabi, Falih al-Fayyad, teilnahmen, sei die Einigung auf die Bildung eines gemeinsamen Zentrums für die Koordination von Sicherheitsmaßnahmen in Bagdad, sagte der türkische Außenminister Hakan Fidan auf einer gemeinsamen Pressekonferenz mit seinem irakischen Amtskollegen Fuad Hussein. Außerdem soll die seit 2015 von der Türkei besetzte Militärbasis Başîqa in ein gemeinsames Ausbildungs- und Kooperationszentrum umgewandelt und den irakischen Streitkräften übertragen werden.
Bereits im März hatten die Türkei und der Irak in Bagdad die Einrichtung mehrerer gemeinsamer ständiger Ausschüsse vereinbart, die in den Bereichen Terrorismusbekämpfung, Handel, Landwirtschaft, Energie, Wasser, Gesundheit und Verkehr tätig werden sollen, um eine „dauerhafte Kooperation“ zwischen beiden Ländern aufzubauen. Im April unterzeichnete schließlich der türkische Staatschef Recep Tayyip Erdogan mit Iraks Regierungschef Mohammed al-Sudani ein Rahmenabkommen zur Zusammenarbeit in den Bereichen Sicherheit, Energie und Wirtschaft. Das beinhaltet auch die Einrichtung einer Sicherheitszone von 30 bis 40 Kilometern, die mit den besetzten Gebieten in Nordostsyrien verbunden sein soll, und ein rund 16 Milliarden Euro teures Straßen- und Eisenbahnprojekt zur Schaffung neuer Handelsrouten durch den Irak. Außerdem sollen die Ölexporte aus dem Irak in die Türkei wieder aufgenommen werden. Durch Projekte dieser Art wollten beide Länder „eine dauerhafte Kooperation in allen Bereichen aufbauen“, sagte der irakische Premier im April bei einem Besuch Erdogans in Bagdad.
Auf der Pressekonferenz in Ankara brachten beide Seiten ihre „Zufriedenheit“ mit dem nun getroffenen Memorandum zum Ausdruck. Der türkische Außenminister Fidan, der bis 2023 Leiter des türkischen Geheimdienstes MIT war, lobte seinen Amtskollegen aus Bagdad für das seit Anfang des Jahres im Irak gültige PKK-Verbot, auf das man lange gewartet habe. Außerdem sprach er sich anerkennend dafür aus, dass mit der ezidischen Partei PADÊ, der Bewegung Tevgera Azadî und der Demokratischen Kampffront drei „Ableger der PKK“ ebenfalls von Bagdad in die Liste der verbotenen Vereinigungen aufgenommen wurden. „Wir erwarten von unseren Nachbarn, dass im nächsten Schritt die PKK als Terrororganisation eingestuft wird“, betonte Fidan. Iraks Außenminister Fuad Hussein signalisierte seine Zustimmung. Dass der Oberste Justizrat seines Landes die Auflösung dieser Organisationen angeordnet hat, sei „ein konkreter Indikator für die Bereitschaft Bagdads, sich mit der PKK und ihren Ablegern auseinanderzusetzen“.

It’s actually kind of obnoxious that Gaza gets framed as a “political” issue at all. If you turned into an alleyway and saw a man dismembering a child, would your reaction to what you were witnessing be “political”? We’re all witnessing raw video footage of horrific atrocities every day; our reaction to this is not comparable to our opinions about prison reform or fiscal policy.
This idea that professors shouldn’t discuss “politics” in class with regard to an active genocide, or that a pianist deserves to have his concert canceled because he expressed “political views” by dedicating a piece to the journalists who’ve been killed in Gaza, or that we shouldn’t bring up Gaza in polite company because it’s talking about “politics” — these are symptoms of a civilization that has gone stark, raving mad.
Our visceral response to what we are witnessing is no more “political” than our reaction to someone stomping on puppies would be “political”. This isn’t one of those “oh yeah well you have your opinion and I have mine and that’s cool” things. Human beings are being butchered by the thousands in full view of the whole world. You don’t get to run cover for this by filing it away under the label of political opinion.

The only way to believe Democrats are significantly better than Republicans or vice-versa is to both (A) be unable to distinguish actions from words and (B) to completely ignore foreign policy.
(A) means you have to look solely at your preferred party’s platform while ignoring the actions they actually take, which are not drastically different from the actions the other party takes relative to the 99.99% of policies and systems they leave in place from administration to administration.
(B) means you have to pay zero attention to all the violence, tyranny and abuse the US government inflicts upon populations around the world, of which there is no meaningful difference between parties at all. The overwhelming majority of American violence, tyranny and abuse is directed not at Americans but at people outside the United States, so by excluding this from your analysis you are excluding almost all of the evils of your preferred party when claiming it is morally superior to the other.

US foreign policy is much, much more consequential, destructive and deadly than US domestic policy. It’s not a “single issue”, it’s almost all of the issues.

Türkische Luftwaffe bombardiert Biradost
Die türkische Luftwaffe hat abermals die Kurdistan-Region des Irak (KRI) bombardiert. Getroffen von mehreren Kampfjets wurden am frühen Donnerstagabend Ziele in Biradost, meldete die Nachrichtenagentur RojNews unter Berufung auf Angaben lokaler Quellen. Die Bomben wurden demnach auf die Orte Sinîn, Tengiya Singa und Lolan abgeworfen und entzündeten an mindestens einer Stelle einen Flächenbrand. Nähere Angaben zum Ausmaß des Schadens gab es zunächst nicht. Ebenso ist noch unklar, ob Menschen verletzt wurden. Der Zivilschutz war bislang nicht im Einsatz.
Biradost (auch Bradost oder Sîdekan) ist ein Unterbezirk des Distrikts Soran und liegt nordöstlich von Hewlêr (Erbil). In der Region kommt es immer wieder zu Luft- und Bodenangriffen der türkischen Armee. Mitte Juli waren in Biradost zwei Hirten verletzt worden, als Weide- und Ackerflächen an den Hängen des Şekiwyan-Massivs unter Beschuss gesetzt wurden. Die Granaten waren inmitten einer Tierherde eingeschlagen, zahlreiches Vieh verendete qualvoll. Im April war ein 43-jähriger Peschmerga bei einem türkischen Luftangriff auf ein Dorf in Biradost getötet worden.
Seit die Türkei ihre Besatzungsoffensive „Operation Klauenschloss“ im Juni ausgeweitet hat, kommt es täglich zu schweren Angriffen und Brandstiftungen im südlichen Kurdistan. Das verfolgte Ziel dabei ist die Vertreibung der Bevölkerung. Nach Angaben der in der KRI ansässigen NGO Community Peacemaker Teams wurden bereits zahlreiche Dörfer infolge der türkischen Militärgewalt entvölkert, weiteren Ortschaft droht dasselbe Schicksal. In diesem Jahr wurden zudem mindestens neun Zivilpersonen durch türkische Luft- und Bodenangriffe getötet. Die internationale Gemeinschaft ignoriert die Verbrechen der Türkei in ihrem Nachbarland.

Note to readers: The latest information is that the earliest I can expert Internet service to be restored is Monday August 19. I hope to be able to post on August 20. It will have taken high tech superpower America a week to restore my Internet service. The outage was not caused by a storm or any act of nature.
Twenty years ago at a conference in Washington DC I said that the combination of jobs offshoring with the importation of millions of third world immigrants would result in the US becoming a third world country in two decades. Sending good jobs out while bringing poor people in eventually makes poverty the norm. My prediction was on the mark. Nothing in America any longer works, including the people.
In the autumn of 1963 when I arrived at Oxford University, it was possible to mail a first class letter to London in the morning and receive a reply that afternoon. I expressed astonishment, but the English complained that until recently they had been able to send a morning letter and receive a reply by noon, and to send a noon letter and receive a reply that afternoon.
In 2024 it took the US Post Office one month and 10 days to deliver my tax return to the IRS. Currently a Priority Mail letter that I sent almost a month ago to a US destination 300 miles away has not been delivered.
In every blue city there are large areas in which white Americans do not enter.
America has become a third world entity with collapsing infrastructure including communications and a government concerned only with power.
Dozens of Civil-Rights and Journalism Groups Urge the Media to Report on Rising Authoritarianism and Threats to Democracy
On Thursday, a coalition of more than three-dozen civil-rights, consumer-rights and journalism organizations released a letter calling on news outlets to accurately and unapologetically report on U.S. elections and the state of our democracy. Led by Free Press, the coalition also includes Hearken, Media Matters for America, MediaJustice, the National Hispanic Media Coalition and PEN America.
Media coverage can invite public engagement and robust participation in the democratic process. It can also be manipulated to promote falsehoods for political gain and to silence dissent. “Democratic backsliding is rising around the world and the media must take the related threats seriously and place protection of democracy over their own bottom lines,” the letter reads. The letter describes six best practices the media should adhere to during moments of crisis, violence and threats to U.S. democracy.
Free Press Senior Counsel and Director of Digital Justice and Civil Rights Nora Benavidez said:
“Now is the time for news outlets to rise to the occasion: They must refuse to cover politics with soundbites that place profit over people’s understanding of the ways in which our basic rights are at risk — including the freedom journalists and the media themselves cherish. Left unchecked by the press, the rhetoric and actions of authoritarian leaders delegitimize the democratic process. Political leaders are dehumanizing minority groups, flouting the rule of law, and supporting violence or retribution against critics. Communities deserve to learn about the stakes facing our country and the implications of rising autocracy on all of our lives.
“As so many hardworking journalists cover the threats to our democracy this election season, all news outlets must hold themselves to the highest pro-democracy standards. Clearly call a lie a lie. If a political candidate, party or other influential platform applauds illegal activity or rejects the rule of law, reporters and other media professionals must take these threats seriously as they are overt attacks on a functional democracy.”
40+ Civil Society Organizations Endorse FCC Proposal to Protect Voters from Deceptive Deepfakes
More than 40 civil society organizations, including Public Knowledge, Vote.org, AFL-CIO, and the National Organization for Women, wrote a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) urging adoption of the agency’s proposal to ensure transparency in the use of AI-generated content in political advertisements on TV and radio.
The groups expressed specific concern about deepfakes which can deceive voters in the leadup to the election, and called for the adoption of measures that required disclosures of AI-generated content on political advertising.
“Evidence now abounds of the significant and deceptive impact that AI-generated content can have,” said the letter in highlighting the magnitude of the problem, adding: “The proposed disclosure requirements are a natural and common-sense extension of the FCC's existing mandates to ensure transparency in broadcasting in general and in political advertising on radio and TV in particular.”
In the letter, the groups “urge the FCC to adopt these rules promptly.”

Syria holds Israeli occupation responsible for the heinous crime in Majdal Shams
New York, SANA- Permanent Delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic in New York sent Thursday two identical letters to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of the Security Council, in which it held the Israeli occupation responsible for the heinous crime in the town of Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan.
“Syria affirms the full responsibility of the Israeli occupation authorities for the heinous crime that took place in the Syrian town of Majdal Shams on July 27th , 2024, a crime that the occupation authorities sought to employ to continue the escalation and its aggressive actions against countries of the region to engage them into a comprehensive war that poses threat to the international peace and security, the letters said.
Syria stressed that the occupied Syrian Arab Golan was and will remain a Syrian territory, a thing which was confirmed by all relevant United Nations resolutions, most notably Resolution No. 497 of 1981.
“Syria also reaffirms that our citizens in Golan are Syrian Arab citizens who were and still are part of the Syrian Arab people, and they adhere to their belonging to their homeland- Syria- and their national identity, they also reject the Israeli occupation and look forward to ending it and putting an end to its criminal practices against them,” the letters added.
Syria once again calls on the United Nations and the Security Council to implement its relevant resolutions, particularly Security Council Resolution No. 497 to end the Israeli occupation of the occupied Arab territories, including the occupied Syrian Golan.

Damascus, SANA- Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Fayssal Mikdad and Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi, exchanged congratulatory messages on the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Syria and China.
Mikdad affirmed his desire to boost bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields and his commitment to implementing presidential directives that reflect the spirit of the important consensus between the leaders of the two countries, which they expressed during the historic summit that brought them together in the city of Hangzhou last September, stressing that the growing momentum of high-level relations is nothing but a reflection of these agreements, which are perfectly in line with the aspirations of the peoples of both countries.
In turn, Minister Wang Yi stressed that Chinese-Syrian relations are deeply- rooted in history, as bilateral relations have maintained a good pace of development in recent years.
Yi added that he is fully prepared to work with the Syrian side to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries in Hangzhou to enhance mutual support and international cooperation and push the strategic relations between the two countries to further progress.

GEZ: Mann verweigert seit einem Jahr die Zahlung des Rundfunkbeitrags
Ein 47-jähriger Mann boykottiert seit fast einem Jahr bewusst den Rundfunkbeitrag. Der Mann lehnt es ab, die monatlichen Gebühren von 18,36 EUR zu entrichten, da er das Angebot der öffentlich-rechtlichen Sender nicht nutzt und den Betrag als überzogen empfindet.
Kritische Haltung gegenüber öffentlich-rechtlichem RundfunkDer Mann argumentiert, dass er weder die Programme von ARD und ZDF schaue noch Radio höre, weshalb er nicht bereit sei, den Beitrag zu zahlen. Er kritisiert insbesondere die Höhe der Gebühren, die im internationalen Vergleich zu den höchsten zählen.
Zudem verweist er auf private finanzielle Schwierigkeiten, die seine Entscheidung weiter beeinflussen.
Finanzielle Probleme und Rückblick auf frühere GEZ-KontrollenBereits vor der Corona-Pandemie war der Mann in einer angespannten finanziellen Lage, die sich durch die Corona-Krise weiter verschärfte. Als er während der Pandemie erwerbslos wurde, übernahm das Jobcenter die Gebühren.
Seit seiner erneuten Selbstständigkeit ist er jedoch wieder selbst verantwortlich, während alte Schulden weiterhin eine Belastung darstellen. Der Mann erinnert sich zudem an frühere Zeiten, als GEZ-Kontrolleure versuchten, Haushalte auf Rundfunkgeräte zu überprüfen. Bereits damals habe er ihnen nie Zugang gewährt.
Mahnungen und mögliche VollstreckungObwohl er regelmäßig Mahnungen und Festsetzungsbescheide erhält, zeigt der Mann keine Bereitschaft, den Beitrag zu zahlen. Die Bescheide, die auch Säumniszuschläge von mindestens acht Euro enthalten, stellen die rechtliche Grundlage für mögliche Vollstreckungen dar.
Die Maßnahmen könnten Geld- oder Sachpfändungen durch die zuständigen Behörden nach sich ziehen. Der Mann bleibt dennoch gelassen und ist überzeugt, dass hartnäckige Verweigerer oft unbehelligt bleiben.
Zuständigkeitswechsel bei der Vollstreckung ab 2024Ab dem 1. Januar 2024 tritt eine Veränderung bei der Vollstreckung der Rundfunkbeiträge in Kraft. Die bisher zuständige Stadtkasse wird dann nicht mehr für die Bearbeitung säumiger Fälle zuständig sein.
Alte Fälle werden an den “ARD-ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice” in Köln übergeben. Diese Änderung folgt einer Anpassung der Verordnung zur Ausführung des Verwaltungsvollstreckungsgesetzes.
Befreiung von der Rundfunkbeitragspflicht – Wer ist berechtigt?In bestimmten Fällen ist eine Befreiung von der Rundfunkbeitragspflicht möglich. Voraussetzung ist der Bezug bestimmter Sozialleistungen oder besondere Härtefälle. Die folgenden Personen können sich von der Zahlung befreien lassen:
Empfänger von Sozialleistungen:
- Bürgergeld (ehemals Arbeitslosengeld II oder Sozialgeld)
- Hilfe zum Lebensunterhalt (SGB XII, 3. Kapitel) oder nach dem Bundesversorgungsgesetz (BVG)
- Grundsicherung im Alter und bei Erwerbsminderung (SGB XII, 4. Kapitel)
- Leistungen nach dem Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAföG),
- Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe oder Ausbildungsgeld (SGB III), sofern die Empfänger nicht bei den Eltern wohnen
- Leistungen nach dem Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz
- Blindenhilfe (SGB XII, § 72 sowie BVG, § 27d)
- Pflegegeld nach landesgesetzlichen Vorschriften (Landespflegegeldgesetze)
- Hilfe zur Pflege (SGB XII, 7. Kapitel) oder Hilfe zur Pflege als Leistung der
- Kriegsopferfürsorge (BVG)
- Pflegezulagen nach dem Lastenausgleichsgesetz (LAG)
Weitere Befreiungsmöglichkeiten:
- Personen, denen wegen Pflegebedürftigkeit ein Freibetrag gemäß LAG (§ 267 Abs. 2 Satz 1 Nr. 2 Buchstabe c) zuerkannt wird
- Volljährige, die im Rahmen einer Leistungsgewährung in einer stationären Einrichtung leben (§ 45 SGB VIII)
Härtefallregelungen:
- Befreiung bei geringem Einkommen: Wenn das Einkommen die Bedarfsgrenze um weniger als die Höhe des Rundfunkbeitrags übersteigt (18,36 EUR monatlich)
- Verzicht auf Sozialleistungen trotz Anspruch: Wer nachweislich auf eine Sozialleistung verzichtet, obwohl ein Anspruch besteht, kann ebenfalls eine Befreiung beantragen.
Studierende ohne BAföG-Anspruch:
- Unter bestimmten Umständen können Studierende, die kein BAföG erhalten, etwa wegen eines Zweitstudiums oder der Überschreitung der Förderhöchstdauer, eine Härtefallbefreiung beantragen.
Der Antrag auf Befreiung kann online ausgefüllt, ausgedruckt und mit den erforderlichen Nachweisen an den Beitragsservice gesendet werden. Folgende Dokumente sind notwendig:

Die Befreiung gilt ab dem Leistungsbeginn des vorgelegten Nachweises und kann bis zu drei Jahre rückwirkend beantragt werden. In der Regel wird eine Befreiung für maximal drei Jahre gewährt, sofern der Bewilligungsbescheid unbefristet ist. Liegen weiterhin die Voraussetzungen für eine Befreiung vor, muss rechtzeitig ein neuer Antrag gestellt werden.

$93.5 Billion in Profits. The big drug companies that produce the ten drugs subject to Medicare negotiation under the Inflation Reduction Act brought in $93.5 billion in profits last year.
$400 Million. Big pharma has been fighting for years to block Medicare negotiation. The industry spent nearly $400 million on lobbying in 2022 alone – not including their campaign contributions and public misinformation campaigns.

Since its passage, the industry has doubled down on tactics to rollback, rescind, or repeal the law to protect their profits, with PhRMA—the largest pharmaceutical trade group—even going as far as to give $530,000 in donations to right-wing fringe organizations intimately involved with Project 2025. Last week, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s case against the program was tossed out due to lack of standing.
