Putin’s Ever-widening War Continues to Widen

Reality it seems is beyond Putin’s grasp. Following today’s 91 drone attack on Putin’s residence, the Russian president quickly reaffirmed his commitment to peace negotiations.

The attempt to kill Putin occurred doing the peace negotiations and a White House report that Trump and Putin have just had a “positive” telephone conversation. Putin told Trump that there would be retaliation against Ukraine, but Putin still shows no intention of using sufficient force to bring the four year old conflict to an end. Apparently, as long as Putin can hold on to the prospect of a peaceful settlement, the conflict will continue.

Contemplate the increase in seriousness of the Western provocations each time the war widens. Not only were all of the weapons sent that the West declared would never be sent, not only were sanctions added to sanctions, not only are Russian civilians, power infrastructure, and airports subject to Ukrainian attack, but also the Russian strategic bombing fleet and now today an attack on President Putin’s life.

By failing to quickly end the conflict by force, Putin invites increasingly serious provocations. At some point, the provocations will reach a level that Putin can no longer ignore and will result in the outbreak of generalized war. This is a reckless risk to continue to take, not an act of diplomacy.

Putin’s irresolution at war has been explained as Russia’s reluctance to kill very many of their Ukrainian brothers. However, the long drawn out village by village slugfest has resulted in many times the Russian and Ukrainian casualties that would have occurred from a quick victory.

From whatever angle we view it, Putin’s conduct of the conflict is so defective that it is inexplicable. Nothing good can come of it.

Damascus, Dec. 29 (SANA) President Ahmad al-Sharaa officially launched the new national currency Monday at the Conference Palace in Damascus, the ceremony was attended by Mrs. Latifa al-Droubi.

President al-Sharaa and the Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdulkader Husrieh, unveiled the new banknotes during the event.

President al-Sharaa said the redenomination marks the end of an era and the start of a new stage for Syria, emphasizing that removing zeros from the old currency eases transactions but does not itself improve the economy. He stressed that economic growth depends on higher production, lower unemployment, and a stable banking sector.

President al-Sharaa called for calm during the transition, assuring citizens that old notes will be exchanged gradually according to a structured timeline. The new notes, reflecting Syria’s heritage, aim to simplify trade, reduce dollar dependence, and restore confidence in the Syrian pound.

Advisor Abdulah Al-Shamma noted that the reform strategy rests on five pillars: monetary stability, a transparent exchange market, a robust banking sector, secure digital payments, and sustainable international financial integration.

Damascus, Dec.29 (SANA) Governor of the Central Bank of Syria (CBS) Abdulkader Husrieh said on Monday that the banknotes redenomination will take place over 90 days, extendable if needed, adding the step helps stabilize prices as pricing during this phase will be in both the old and new currencies.

“Our vision is to make the Central Bank of Syria the national pillar of stability, and within this vision came the decision to replace the currency. It is a technical process that does not change the value of the currency, but is merely a redenomination,” Husrieh added during a dialogue panel at a celebration to launch the new Syrian banknotes.  

CBS Governor affirmed that the Bank has benefited from the experiences of successful countries in currency redenomination, such as the French and German experiments, especially since they followed the end of a war or a major political change.

“We received the central bank in a catastrophic state because of the practices of the deposed regime, and despite the challenges, we succeeded in achieving stability,” Husrieh said.

He added that the currency redenomination will not affect the exchange rate, and it is expected to help people rely more on the Syrian pound in their daily transactions.

He called on citizens to boost confidence in the Syrian pound and to be reassured about the currency renomination process.

“We emphasize that the replacement deadlines we have set are essential to ensure the smooth progress of this process, and that there is no room for increased inflation or rising prices,” Husrieh added.

He demanded merchants and money change dealers to abide by the regulations and laws, and not to exploit the currency exchange process.

In einem weiteren großen Schritt gegen den Klimaalarmismus unter der Trump-Regierung haben die Federal Reserve, die Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation und das Office of the Comptroller of the Currency am 16. Oktober stillschweigend eine Reihe von Vorschriften aufgehoben, die als „Grundsätze für das klimabezogene Finanzrisikomanagement für große Finanzinstitute” bezeichnet werden und 2023 unter der Biden-Regierung eingeführt worden waren.

„Eine mögliche Folge könnte sein, dass Banken davon abgehalten werden, Kredite zu vergeben und Finanzdienstleistungen für bestimmte Branchen anzubieten, so dass diese gezwungen wären, Kredite außerhalb des Bankensystems bei Nicht-Bank-Kreditgebern aufzunehmen“, berichtete The Epoch Times unter Berufung auf Bowman. „Dies könnte dazu führen, dass der Zugang zu Finanzdienstleistungen eingeschränkt oder ganz unterbunden wird und die Kreditkosten für diese Branchen steigen. Diese Kosten würden letztendlich von den Verbrauchern getragen werden.“

Die Epoch Times merkte an, dass die Maßnahme dieser Behörden nicht die erste Rücknahme von Finanz-Klimavorschriften durch Bundesbehörden war. Der US-Finanzstabilitätsrat unter dem Vorsitz von Finanzminister Scott Bessent löste zwei Gremien auf, die eingerichtet worden waren, um klimabezogene systemische Risiken für den gesamten Finanzsektor zu analysieren. Bessent merkte an, dass die Maßnahme im September für die Behörde von entscheidender Bedeutung war, um ihren Fokus wieder auf „zentrale Fragen der Finanzstabilität” zu richten, darunter Banksicherheit, Liquiditätsrisiken und die Aufsicht über Nichtbanken-Finanzunternehmen, anstatt knappe Ressourcen für unbekannte und unwahrscheinliche mögliche zukünftige klimabezogene Schäden abzuzweigen, die Finanzinstitute nicht mit hinreichender Genauigkeit berechnen könnten.

Eine Kältewelle mit Schneefällen hat die Situation im Flüchtlingscamp Waşokanî in Nordostsyrien deutlich verschärft. Nach Angaben von Bewohner:innen sind mehrere Zelte unter der Schneelast eingestürzt, zahlreiche weitere wurden durch eindringendes Wasser unbewohnbar. Es mangele an Heizmaterial und humanitärer Hilfe, berichten Betroffene.

Das Camp nahe der Stadt Hesekê beherbergt seit Jahren tausende Vertriebene aus der Region um Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain), die während der türkischen Invasion im Jahr 2019 ihre Heimat verlassen mussten. Besonders ältere Zelte seien mittlerweile stark beschädigt und böten keinen ausreichenden Schutz mehr gegen die Witterung, erklärten Geflüchtete gegenüber einem Reporter von ANHA.

 

„Unsere Zelte halten dem Schnee und der Kälte nicht stand, das Wasser dringt ein und viele Menschen sind krank“, sagte die Camp-Bewohnerin Kamra Ibrahim Abdo. Die aus Serêkaniyê stammende Frau berichtete von Atemwegserkrankungen, Fieber und Unterkühlungen unter der Bevölkerung. „Die letzte Dieselration reicht nicht aus. Wir brauchen mindestens 15 Liter Heizöl pro Tag, aber es gibt kaum Nachschub“, erklärte sie.

Mehrere Personen mussten laut ihren Angaben bereits medizinisch versorgt werden. „Unsere Matratzen sind durchnässt, die Böden in den Zelten stehen unter Wasser“, so Abdo weiter. Ihr größter Wunsch sei es, in ihre Heimat zurückzukehren: „Wir wollen einfach nur in unsere Häuser zurück. Aber jetzt brauchen wir dringend neue Zelte.“

Auch Rami Khidr, ein Vertriebener aus der Region Til Temir, schilderte die schwierige Lage: „Die Heizmittel reichen nicht aus. Unsere Zelte sind beschädigt, es fehlt an Decken, Diesel und auch an humanitärer Hilfe insgesamt.“ Er rief Hilfsorganisationen und Behörden zum sofortigen Eingreifen auf: „Wir wollen nach Hause zurück, aber bis dahin brauchen wir Schutz und Unterstützung.“

Das Camp Waşokanî, das mehrere tausend Menschen beherbergt, gerät bei jeder Kältewelle erneut an seine Grenzen. Die Infrastruktur ist schwach, die humanitäre Versorgung unzureichend. Besonders in den Wintermonaten führt das regelmäßig zu dramatischen Notlagen. Auch in anderen Lagern für Vertriebene verschärfen Kältewellen jedes Jahr die humanitäre Lage.

Die Demokratischen Kräfte Syriens (QSD) haben der islamistischen Übergangsregierung in Damaskus vorgeworfen, erneut gegen das bestehende Waffenstillstandsabkommen verstoßen zu haben. Nach Angaben des Medien- und Kommunikationszentrums der QSD kam es am Montagnachmittag gegen 16 Uhr Ortszeit zu einem Artillerieangriff auf ein Wohngebiet nahe dem Tişrîn-Staudamm südlich von Kobanê.

Bei dem Beschuss mit Artillerie und schweren Waffen seien drei Mitglieder verletzt worden, teilte das multiethnische Bündnis in einer Erklärung mit. Die Angreifer sollen bewaffnete Milizen sein, die dem Kommando des sogenannten Verteidigungsministeriums in Damaskus unterstehen.

Die QSD warfen den regierungstreuen Fraktionen vor, wiederholt Feuerpausen in verschiedenen Regionen Nord- und Ostsyriens zu brechen. Man übe jedoch das „legitime Recht auf Selbstverteidigung“ aus, um weitere Eskalationen zu verhindern und die Stabilität in der Region zu bewahren, hieß es weiter. Angaben zur Identität der Verwundeten und zur Schwere ihrer Verletzungen machte das Bündnis nicht.

Lattakia, Dec. 29 (SANA) Internal Security forces in the Jableh area arrested Zulfiqar Mahmoud Deeb, identified as a member of the deposed regime’s remnants, during a high-precision security operation carried out in Baabda village, the Interior Ministry said on Monday via Telegram.

The ministry said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was involved in terrorist attacks that targeted army and internal security positions along the coast on March 6. It added that the suspect is also implicated in acts of desecration of the bodies of martyrs who were killed during those attacks.

The Secretary of the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) abrupt cessation of all leases for major offshore wind electric generation facilities under construction is not legally defensible and raises significant conflict of interest issues, according to a letter Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) sent to congressional committees today.

Last week, DOI Secretary Doug Burgum announced that the administration was “pausing—effective immediately the leases for all large-scale offshore wind projects under construction in the United States” pending a national security review of the projects. This directive was in the form of five preemptory “orders” to five separate offshore wind projects issued by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), an agency within DOI.

In its letter to the Chairs and Ranking Members of the Senate Energy and Natural Resource Committee and the House Committee on Natural Resources, PEER argues that the Congressional Review Act (CRA) stipulates that an agency action of this type must be submitted to Congress before it can take effect. Moreover, PEER argues that Burgum’s actions are a “major rule” which under the CRA cannot take effect for at least 60 days, during which Congress can move to block it.

“Burgum’s move is designed to bypass all Congressional and public input,” stated PEER’s Executive Director Tim Whitehouse, a former senior enforcement attorney with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Whitehouse noted the irony of Republicans using the CRA to repeal the Biden administration’s administrative actions on offshore oil and gas drilling that they assert were not properly reported under the CRA while Burgum seeks to evade CRA review for his offshore wind moratorium.

In addition, PEER is raising conflict of interest concerns about Matthew Giacona’s — the acting director of BOEM — recent investments in the United States Natural Gas Fund, which will likely benefit from less offshore wind power generation. BOEM issues permits for offshore wind projects.

“Burgum’s actions on offshore wind appear to be motivated by the personal financial interests of those in the administration, not our collective national interests,” added Whitehouse. “This is another misguided step in transforming the federal government into a franchise of the fossil fuel industry.”

“On public lands across the United States, the Department of the Interior has tens of thousands of additional active leases related to oil, gas, wind, solar, and geothermal production and mining for energy-related minerals. If last week’s actions are allowed to stand, future presidents will have unchecked authority under the guise of national security to target federal leases related to entire disfavored energy industries for political purposes,” said Whitehouse.

He said the display underscores continuity and steadfastness, linking the country’s history with steps toward stability and modernization, in a scene that “reflects a spirit of belonging and embodies a national moment that lights memory and inspires hope.”

The governor said the executive instructions for Decree No. 293 of 2025 on currency replacement represent an important organizational step, signaling the start of the practical phase of this national undertaking. He said the instructions clarify mechanisms and procedures, ensure smooth implementation, protect citizens’ rights, and strengthen confidence in the monetary system within a clear legal framework.

Husrieh added that issuing the executive instructions confirms readiness to move into a new phase based on stability and modernization, serving the public interest and the national economy.

Earlier today, the Central Bank of Syria issued some of the executive instructions for Decree No. 293 of 2025 related to the launch of the new Syrian currency, noting that full details will be published later alongside the decree.

Since it is December 29 today, and the New Year is just round the corner, an interesting – from a political point of view too – detail can be mentioned: in the outgoing year, President Vladimir Putin held 17 contacts with US representatives. This includes a visit to Alaska, ten telephone conversations with Donald Trump, and six meetings with his special envoys. What does this mean? You can draw your own conclusions. As agreed earlier, another telephone conversation took place today between the presidents of Russia and the United States. Donald Trump and his key advisers who were present during the call provided a detailed briefing on the main outcomes of yesterday’s talks with the Ukrainian delegation at Mar-a-Lago.

In their presentation, that is, the American presentation, during these talks the US side took an assertive stance in promoting the idea that Kiev needs to take real steps towards the final settlement of the conflict instead of using demands for a temporary ceasefire as cover. Zelensky was advised to not even try to secure a respite for his armed forces but instead focus on achieving a comprehensive agreement that would lead to the actual end to the armed conflict.

Donald Trump informed [the President of Russia] about certain results achieved by Zelensky’s team precisely in this direction, but which nevertheless, in our assessment, still leave the Kiev authorities room for various interpretations in order to evade fulfilment of their commitments.

And of course, Vladimir Putin drew attention of his counterpart Donald Trump to the fact that practically immediately after what the US side considers a successful round of talks at Mar-a-Lago, the Kiev regime carried out a terrorist attack involving a barrage of long-range unmanned aerial vehicles, an attack on the state residence of the President of Russia in the Novgorod Region.

The Russian side clearly stated that such reckless terrorist acts will, of course, not go unanswered and will meet with the most serious response.

The US President was shocked by this information, literally outraged. He said that he could not even imagine such irrational actions. And, as was stated, this will undoubtedly affect the approaches of the United States in the context of working with Zelensky, to whom the current administration, as Donald Trump himself said, did not, thankfully, give Tomahawks.

Vladimir Putin emphasised that the Russian side intends to continue close and productive work with its US partners in searching for ways to achieve peace. However, naturally, with regard to a number of agreements reached at the previous stage and the newly outlined solutions, Russia’s position will be revised. This was stated very clearly, and the Americans should treat this with understanding. Since Kiev is using the state terrorism, the Russian side cannot act otherwise.

Such was the nature of the conversation, at the end of which both presidents, in a very friendly manner, agreed to maintain dialogue onwards.
